Eating delicious, nutritious meals doesn’t have to break the bank. It just requires some real-world strategies and planning.

It can sometimes seem dauntingly expensive to eat a healthy diet. The prices of organic produce, eggs and meat are sometimes eye popping. And given the recent increased expenses of everything from gasoline to restaurant food, we need strategies for putting delicious, nutritious food on the table at a reasonable cost.

Here are 5 real-world strategies and 3 budget-friendly recipes to help you out: Download the guide below for easy reference.

  1. Prioritize nutrient-rich foods that might be a little more expensive (for example, salmon vs. a hot dog) but will pay off in terms of better health and lower health care expenses.
  2. Prepare your own meals at home, using fresh, unprocessed ingredients. It is less expensive than relying on restaurant or packaged foods.
  3. Prep your meals so you always have healthy, delicious food on hand and won’t be tempted to go through the drive-through or buy junk food when you’re hungry.
  4. Become a saavy shopper by using coupons and employee discounts, identifying cost-effective healthy foods (e.g. canned fish, produce, lentils) and looking at unit prices
  5. Avoid wasting food by planning your weekly meals over the weekend, creating a shopping list, sticking to the list when shopping, and freezing extra portions for later meals.
